About us
Certainly the most historic
& oldest pub in Harrogate originating as one of the first inns for spa
visitors after sulphur wells were first established in the mid-18th
century.
Our main lounge bar preserves
its historic character with mirrors & other interesting features &
fittings from the Victorian era, including traditional gas lighting & bar
top cigar lighters. The original
Georgian style Vaults room which previously traded as a wines & spirits
merchants was refurbished in 2013, uncovering original wooden ship beams, a
stone display alcove & fireplace now with a more traditional real log
burner. This room is available for private functions, ideal for meetings &
accommodates 30 guests. The building is reputed to be haunted although we’ve yet
to be spooked!
Included in many novels,
historic pub guides & newspaper articles, used by Sir John Barbirolli as
his favourite when the Halle Orchestra visited to play in the town, it was also
used for interior scenes in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire & DCI Banks in
2012.
Weekly entertainment includes
our popular Thurs karaoke, twice weekly open-mic acoustic sessions Weds from
8.30 pm & Sun from 4.30 pm & a monthly folk afternoon.
Serving a full bar range of
cask ales, wine & spirits; home- made lunches & we’ve even a secret
beer garden created in 2016.
